 Chalk is applied to the tip of the cue stick, ideally before every shot, to increase the tip's friction coefficient so that when it impacts the cue ball on a non-center hit, no miscue (unintentional slippage between the cue tip and the struck ball) occurs.

Cue Chalk Holder - Do we need it?

A Cue Chalk Holder? WTF IS THAT?   Yeah. That was my question only a few minutes ago 12:00am 6/25/2015 when i first seen a search for it. Now that I think about it I think I might give it a try if I am ever going to stop getting it all over the place like my pants, face, neck, back, you're face,hands, back, ....you get the point. So yeah I think I am going to try a chalk bag the next time I go and pretend to be a pool shark!!
